Flood Wreaks Havoc In Nasarawa, Destroys Over 60 Houses

The Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Zachary Allumaga, revealed the development during a press conference held in Lafia on Saturday.

Nasarawa State has witnessed a catastrophic flood in two of its local government areas, resulting in the destruction of more than 60 homes and properties valued at millions of naira.

He described the unfortunate flood disaster that rendered many residents homeless and their belongings in ruins as devastating.

According to Daily Post, it was observed that in Lafia, the flood overwhelmed the student’s residential area (Off-campus) at the Federal University of Lafia, wreaking havoc on personal properties such as computers, mattresses, books, food items, and other valuables.

The director, while giving details of a separate flooding incident that occured in Toto LGA, said approximately 60 houses were submerged and a vast number of properties were destroyed.

He attributed the flooding in Toto LGA to gully erosion.

Allumaga assured that plans were being put in place to provide relief materials to the affected communities in Toto LGA and the Federal University off-campus area in Lafia.

The NASEMA DG assured that the agency would remain resolute in fulfilling its mandate, which includes disaster prevention and mitigation through various initiatives such as awareness campaigns, victim evacuation, and the provision of relief materials to disaster-stricken communities.
